What Do Christadelphians Believe & Teach?

We, the Christadelphians ("Brethren of Christ"), are a group of people linked by a common belief in the Gospel of the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. This link is formed when a believer is baptised (immersed) into Christ to have their sins forgiven and to have a part in the resurrection to Life Everlasting.

We accept the Bible as being the Word of God. It is the only source from which God and His purpose for mankind and the Earth can be learnt.

Some of our fundamental beliefs stand out as being quite different to many other Christian religions. Please consider some of these beliefs with Bible verses providing a Scriptural basis.

THE BIBLE: This is the inspired and infallible Word of God, the only dependable source for the saving truth of the Gospel.

GOD: There is one God, the Father and Creator of all things, dwelling in the heavens. He is immortal, and all wise, filling all space by His spirit. He has revealed His divine will and purpose with mankind and with the Earth, in the Bible.

HOLY SPIRIT: This is the invisible Power of God, the Divine energy by which He fills all space and creates and sustains all things. This power is called "Holy" (meaning 'separate' or 'set apart') when it is used for a special purpose eg. birth of Jesus and other miracles. God gave some believers in the first century the power of the Holy Spirit to help spread the messae of the Gospel. These miraculous gifts were withdrawn in accordance with 1 Corinthians 13:8-10.

MAN: God created man from the dust of the ground. Men are prone to sin and as such all men are mortal creatures. In death man ceases to exist returning to the dust of the ground. Eternal life can come only through a bodily resurrection.

JESUS CHRIST: Son of God and Son of Man. He was conceived by the action of God's Holy Spirit on Mary, a virgin. He was human like us all. Jesus had no existence before his birth, although ordained to fulfill God's purpose. He was put to death on the cross as a sacrifice for sin, both for himself and those he came to save. Because of his life of perfect obedience he was raised from the dead to immortality. This provides forgiveness for all believing in him.

THE DEVIL: This is not a supernatural being but the evil principle in human nature styled "sin in the flesh" which gives all men a tendency to sin, to disobey God's commandments.

THE REDEEMED: Those who will inherit the promised blessings are those drawn out of all nations by the power of the Gospel, by obeying its principles in baptism and a life of faith. These blessings will be given when Jesus Christ returns to judge the responsible dead and living. Those found faithful will receive eternal life, but the rejected will receive everlasting destruction.

THE KINGDOM OF GOD: This was the ancient Kingdom of Israel. God's Kingdom will be re-established on Earth with its King, the Lord Jesus Christ, reigning from Jerusalem. At his coming, Christ will complete the restoration of the Jews to the land and will establish his rule over all the Earth. This reign will commence with a resurrection and judgment of the responsible dead and living. Christ’s reign, with the assistance of his glorified believers, will continue for 1000 years, at the end of which another judgment will take place of those who have lived during the millennium. The righteous will be given eternal life; the unrighteous will be delivered unto eternal death; and a perfected Earth, in which death itself will have been eliminated, will be delivered to God that He might be "all in all".

EARTH: In the future the Earth shall abide for ever. It will ultimately be filled with a race of righteous, immortal people revealing the glory of God in their divine nature.

THE GOSPEL: Also known as the "good news", it incorporates the promise of a land, a king, redemption from sin and death by the promised seed and a blessing for all people in the Age to come. The Gospel message also concerns the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the promised seed, by whose sacrifice God's righteousness was declared and through whose grace we are saved.

God has reconciled us to Himself through His Son Jesus. He requires that we believe the things of the Gospel and, through our faith in the saving work of Christ and baptism, our sins are forgiven and we, through God's grace, can stand justified at the Day of Judgment.
